Tierney Sutton Department Chair
The New York Times calls Tierney Sutton "...a serious jazz artist who takes the whole enterprise to another level." In 2007, Tierney received her second consecutive Grammy Nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album for On The Other Side, her band's emotional statement on the pursuit of happiness in America. The Tierney Sutton Band has been together over 15 years and is currently working on its 8th CD together. The band is a model of both musical quality as well as business creativity, since the members are incorporated partners. Her band colleagues, Christian Jacob, Trey Henry, Kevin Axt, and Ray Brinker are musical masters and have performed and recorded with artists and projects in all aspects of the music industry. Members of the Tierney Sutton Band can be heard all over the current music scene, from American Idol to Dancing With The Stars, from Natalie Cole to Norah Jones, from Symphonic work to TV soundtracks. The band's CDs consistently top the jazz radio charts, leading to Tierney's selection as Jazzweek's 2005 Vocalist of the Year. Tierney has headlined in recent years at Carnegie Hall, The Hollywood Bowl, The Kennedy Center and Jazz At Lincoln Center. She tours extensively throughout the world and her voice can be heard on television soundtracks (Samantha Who, Journeyman), TV commercials (Yoplait Yogurt, BMW, JC Penny, Green Giant) as well as several feature film soundtracks including the Academy Award Nominated film The Cooler. Tierney teaches workshops throughout the world and served as an adjunct professor of Jazz Studies at The University of Southern California for 11 years. She served as Head of USC's Jazz Vocal Department for 5 years. Diana Booker
Diana Booker began her musical career touring with Chick Corea's "Original Return to Forever" in the belly of her mother. She grew up on the road traveling the world like a gipsy with her parents, Brazilian Jazz pioneers singer Flora Purim and percussionist Airto Moreira. Today, She possesses extensive experience with the recording process and is an accomplished vocal arranger, stylist and lyricist. Fluent in Portuguese, Spanish and English, she is able to execute virtually any style of music. Diana is in a band with her husband Krishna, son of Jazz bassist Walter Booker, nephew of saxophonist Wayne Shorter and godson of pianist Herbie Hancock. Together, they continue to write and produce music for her parents as well as for themselves and other artists. Ms. Flahive discovered her love of singing, choral music, and opera as a child when she attended opera performances and concerts with her parents. At age 18, she was introduced to master teacher Helen McComas and began private lessons with Helen and occasionally with McComas' mentor, Vladimir Schustroff. Ms. Flahive's current position is Soprano Soloist and Cantor at The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles. She is also Cantor at Sacred Heart Church in Covina and Co-Founder and Executive Director of Pueri Cantores San Gabriel Valley, a non-profit children's choir. Lauren's long list of performances includes the Los Angeles Master Chorale, Zephyr, I Cantori and many others. Ms. Flahive has also recorded extensively for Oregon Catholic Press and maintains a private voice studio. She attended Orange Coast College and received a Bachelor's Degree in Music from Chapman University. Pat Flahive
Pat Flahive is very busy. He is: President and Artistic Director of the American Federation Pueri Cantores; Music Director at Sacred Heart Church and School in Covina, CA; Vice President of the International Federation Pueri Cantores. He has served as choral director to the Sovereign Military Order of Malta during its annual pilgrimages to Lourdes, France, and is also Founder/Director of the world-renowned Pueri Cantores San Gabriel Valley. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Vocal Performance from Chapman University, Orange, CA, and a Master of Arts in Choral Conducting from California State University, Los Angeles. Irene Garcia
A native of Ecuador, Irene started singing at a very early age. Irene has worked as a lead singer for many different bands, session singer for television and radio commercials, and as a live and session background vocalist for Ecuador's top artists like Juan Fernando Velasco, Tercer Mundo, Riccardo Perotti, Pamela Cortes, among others. She graduated from the Los Angeles Music Academy in 2003 and continues to hone her vocal technique with Kevyn Lettau. Since moving to Los Angeles, Irene has worked with renowned artists such as Latin Pop recording artist Noelia and has done session work with Grammy Award winner Darlene Koldenhoven and Latin Grammy nominee Paulina Aguirre. Irene's vocals have been featured on the albums Voices Within by DJ Monti and Beyond Orange by composers Andrew Campbell and Emir Isilay. Irene is currently working on her own project, writing, and getting ready to record. Dani Palomino
Dani Palomino first caught the music bug at age eight when an uncle introduced her to the rock group KISS. Face painting, guitar lessons and talent shows followed until she discovered her true instrument-voice. Under the direction of Dr. Arthur LaPierre, Dani learned the basics of vocal technique. She continued to study voice and music theory while earning her bachelor's degree in creative writing from the University of Pennsylvania. In 1991, she released a CD with Philadelphia-based blues band, Soul City. In recent years, Dani has studied with Sunny Wilkinson, Kevyn Lettau, Helen McComas and Bill Brendle. She has recorded for Zenasia International (a company that produces karaoke/sing-along tapes) and with Katia Moraes and Sambaguru, a Brazilian band based in Los Angeles. Dani is an ardent student of American roots music (blues, gospel, hillbilly and jazz) and is currently writing/recording material that explores these genres. Dave Pozzi has been a Los Angeles based free-lance artist since 1979, recording and playing with artists like: Henry Mancini, Mel Torme, Celine Dion, David Foster, Johnny Mathis, Jeff Hamilton, Rich Little, Charlie Shoemake, Mellissa Manchester, Marvin Stamm, Bobby Shew, Pete Christlieb, Don Menza, Roy McCurdy, Bob Cooper, Jeff Berlin, Diana Krall, Billy Childs, and others. Big band credits include Ray Anthony, Bob Crosby, Bill Watrous, Louie Bellson, Bob Florence, and Doc Severinsen. Dave is featured as a soloist on recordings with John Patitucci, Nick Brignola, Dick Berk, Bob Magnusson, Ray Pizzi, and Milcho Leviev. Other recording work includes radio and TV commercials, TV shows like The Osbournes, and numerous demos and record dates. Howie Shear
After receiving a master's degree from the Eastman School of Music, Howie moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a musician/composer/arranger. He soon took a slight detour to go on the road where he played lead trumpet with the Woody Herman Orchestra. After two years, he moved back to LA, and has since performed on countless TV and movie soundtracks, commercials, Broadway shows and recordings. Howie has performed with Tony Bennett, George Benson, Stevie Wonder, the Temptations, Natalie Cole, Linda Ronstadt, and Mel Torme, to name a few. In addition to performing, Howie has been an active composer/arranger/orchestrator getting his first big break as the musical arranger for the Joan Rivers late night talk show, where he composed for a 16-piece big band 5 nights a week. Howie is currently scoring his fourth movie and, in 2002, received his doctorate in music from the University of Southern California. Joey Carbone
Joey Carbone is an award-winning music producer, composer, arranger, and keyboardist. He has composed and produced over 1000 songs for top Japanese recording artists, TV themes, movies and commercials, garnering 10 Platinum and 47 Gold records along the way. Except for Beatles songs, Joey's songs have been recorded by more Japanese artists than any other foreign composer, leading him to the BMI "Most Performed Song" Award in '84 and '85. Carbone was the musical director and theme composer for 10 years on the long-running TV talent show Star Search, producing music for Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Destiny's Child, Alanis Morissette, Justin Timberlake, and Usher. |
